3 New York Mets That Need to Step Up for the Team to Secure a Postseason Berth

Introduction

The New York Mets have been one of the most disappointing teams in baseball this season. After winning 101 games and reaching the World Series last year, the Mets are currently 44-44 and in danger of missing the playoffs altogether.

Several players have underperformed for the Mets this season, but three players, in particular, need to step up if the team wants to make a run at the postseason.

3 Mets That Need to Step Up

1. Brandon Nimmo

Nimmo is the Mets' leadoff hitter and one of their best all-around players. However, he has struggled mightily this season, batting just .250 with a .315 on-base percentage and a .365 slugging percentage.

Nimmo needs to get on base more and provide a spark at the top of the lineup. If he can do that, the Mets' offense will be much more dangerous.

2. Starling Marte

Marte was acquired by the Mets in a trade with the Oakland Athletics in February. He was expected to be a key part of the Mets' offense, but he has also struggled this season, batting just .273 with a .323 on-base percentage and a .433 slugging percentage.

Marte needs to provide more pop in the middle of the lineup. He is a good hitter with power, but he needs to be more consistent.

3. Edwin Diaz

Diaz is the Mets' closer, and he has been one of the best closers in baseball over the past few seasons. However, he has struggled this season, blowing five saves and posting a 4.35 ERA.

Diaz needs to be more reliable in the ninth inning. If he can do that, the Mets will have a much better chance of winning close games.

Conclusion

The Mets need several players to step up if they want to make a run at the postseason. Nimmo, Marte, and Diaz are three of the most important players on the team, and if they can all play to their potential, the Mets will be a much tougher team to beat.
