Ontario MPP Apologizes for Statement on Israel-Palestine Conflict

Jama Removed from Critic Role Following Social Media Post

Statement Decried "Generations-Long Occupation of Palestine"

Hamilton Centre NDP MPP Sarah Jama has issued an apology after facing criticism for a statement she made on social media about the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

In a letter to NDP Leader Marit Stiles, Jama said she regretted "the pain and offense" her statement caused. She also said she supports a two-state solution to the conflict and that she is committed to fighting for human rights and justice for all people.

Jama's original statement, which was posted on Twitter, decried the "generations-long occupation of Palestine" and called for an end to the "Israeli apartheid regime." The statement was met with criticism from some Jewish groups, who said it was anti-Semitic and biased against Israel.

In her letter of apology, Jama said she did not intend to cause offense and that she believes her statement was "consistent with the NDP's values of social justice and human rights." However, she said she understands that her words were hurtful to some people and that she regrets any pain she caused.

Stiles said she accepted Jama's apology and that she believes Jama is committed to fighting for justice and equality for all people.

Jama has been removed from her role as the NDP's critic for anti-racism and hate crimes. She will continue to represent Hamilton Centre in the Ontario Legislature.
